Looking to line a pond, channel or similar water body? Puddling clay is a time-tested material that provides a water-tight finish. Based in Sittingbourne and covering all of Kent – see further down the page for a full list of areas we cover – Shaw Haulage can deliver any quantity you require, using our grab hire fleet to make short work of the transportation and unloading, bypassing the manual labour that’d be typically required.
The benefits of using puddling clay include the fact it’s more environmentally friendly than similar alternatives, and encourages the proliferation of local fauna and flora. It’s also a very affordable option that enjoys a long lifespan if the body of water itself remains well maintained.
Keep in mind this is far the only aggregate we supply, and information on other vital materials we sell can be found over on our dedicated aggregate page.
Another great application of puddling clay is in sealing contaminated sites like landfills, making it a vital material that our land restoration team uses on projects throughout the Kent area.
Not all sites are suitable for puddling clay, due to the fact it requires a firm base; areas with structurally unsound bases, like sliding soils, are not compatible. Likewise, the soil itself needs to be right type. So before placing an order, speak with our team for tailored advice and we’ll be able to help ascertain whether puddling clay will do the job without issue, or recommend alternatives.
Should you purchase a quantity of puddling clay, it may come wet, ideal for immediate use; if dry upon arrival, it will need to be wetted overnight to ensure it’s the right consistency. Once compacted, the filling of the water body should be undertaken right away to prevent it from drying out, so do keep in mind timeframes must be strict when first planning the project.
If being used to line ponds, we’d recommend laying it to a depth of 200 to 300mm; in areas in which erosion is a concern, depth should be increased. Smaller areas can use correspondingly less puddling clay, 15-25cm being around the recommendation. Lakes, canals and large ponds will need more to safeguard against potential damage.
